Every Free Youth Program in Galt: A Parent's Guide

From library storytimes to drop-in teen centers, here's where Galt kids can join activities without paying tuition or league fees.

Where to find free programs

Galt's best free option is the Free Kids Programs at the Galt Library. The Marian O. Lawrence Library at 1000 Caroline Ave runs storytimes and other kids events during library hours (Tue-Sat, 10 AM to 6 PM). Free library cards, computers, tablets, and Wi-Fi come with it.

The Galt Teen Center After-School Drop-In opens Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:30 to 6 PM. Teens can hang out in a supervised space with educational and leisure activities. It's nonprofit and free.

For elementary and middle schoolers, the Galt Expanded Learning After-School Program (GEL) runs at every GJUESD campus until 6 PM on school days. Kids get a snack, homework help, and STEM enrichment. It's run by the school district; contact your school office about enrollment.

Youth sports and outdoor groups

Basketball - Youth through Galt Parks & Rec is free for grades 1-8, with Saturday games running 9 AM to 7 PM. Registration happens before the season, and 4th-8th graders go through a draft.

Galt 4-H Club meets the first Sunday of each month at 3 PM. Kids ages 5 to 18 pick hands-on projects (animal science, gardening, cooking, robotics, public speaking) and present them at fairs. It's part of the UC Cooperative Extension Sacramento County program.

Cub Scouts Pack 238 serves kindergarten through 5th grade. Dens meet twice a month for outdoor skills and badge work, and the whole pack gathers monthly. Scouts BSA Troop 1119 takes kids ages 11 to 17 on weekly meetings, monthly campouts, and a path to Eagle Scout. Both charge modest annual fees and optional activity costs, but core meetings are accessible.

Girl Scouts Troops in Galt fall under Service Unit 144 (covering Galt, Elk Grove, Wilton, and South Sacramento). Registration is $25 per year through GSUSA, and troop dues vary by leader. Daisy through Ambassador levels (kindergarten through 12th grade) are available.

Galt Sea Scouts is for teens ages 14 to 20. This maritime branch of Scouting America teaches boating, seamanship, and leadership. The group fundraises locally through a Christmas tree lot.

Limited-time free trials

Free 2 Week Muay Thai for Self Defense at Galt Martial Arts Academy runs for kids ages 5 to 17. Sessions were scheduled for October 15-23 (Thursdays and Fridays at 5 PM), and the academy may offer similar trials again. Check their page for upcoming dates.

Homeschool families

Iron Dragon Homeschool P.E. (Charter Schools) in downtown Galt is available to charter school students in Sacramento and San Joaquin counties. Families use charter funds to cover the cost, making it effectively free if you're already enrolled in a participating charter.

Impact Homeschool P.E. at Impact Sports Center costs $120 per month, so it's not free, but many charter schools reimburse it as a P.E. vendor. Friday morning classes mix ninja skills and tumbling.

FAQ

Are library programs really free for everyone?

Yes. The Galt Library offers storytimes, kids events, and computer access to anyone with a free library card. No registration fees, no income requirements.

Does the after-school program at my child's school cost anything?

The Galt Expanded Learning After-School Program is the district's own after-school program at every GJUESD campus. Contact your school office to confirm eligibility, enrollment, and any cost.

What do Scouts and 4-H actually charge?

Cub Scouts Pack 238 and Scouts BSA Troop 1119 charge annual dues plus costs for uniforms, camping trips, and summer camp; ask the pack or troop for current numbers. Galt 4-H Club has a county enrollment fee and project-specific costs like animal feed or supplies; email the club for current pricing.

Can my teen drop in at the Teen Center anytime?

The Galt Teen Center is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:30 to 6 PM. No appointment needed.

How do I know if a free trial will turn into a paid program?

Programs like Free 2 Week Muay Thai are designed as introductions. At the end of the trial, the studio will offer a paid membership. You're not obligated to continue.

Start with one or two programs that fit your schedule. Most free options (library, Teen Center, GEL) let you walk in or register quickly, so you can try them this week.
